Question about gold removal from clad base
I have 7 of the National Collectors Mint 1849 $20 Liberty Gold coins. Is there a way to remove the gold plating or would it be a waste of time. I'm assuming it's as thin as paint. Thanks.

Re: Question about gold removal from clad base
If it's plating, which is what "clad" usually means, there isn't enough to be worthwhile. Plating is typically only a millionth of an inch thick, compared to thousandths for paint. If you had a million of them that might be worth fiddling with. For example you could get an ounce of gold from the plated fingers on roughly half a million computer cards.

Re: Question about gold removal from clad base
I'm with Saul on this. The gold content on these types of coins is rather negligible. Sell them to some sucker and buy some 90% silver with the proceeds.
